Anyone wanting to reduce their waste costs and footprint should be working with Mil-tek to optimise their waste streams for efficient and cost-effective recycling.

Mil-tek’s Jason Campbell is a founding member of the Central Coast Sustainability Association (CCSA). The Association is a group of local like minded businesses that work together to build a sustainable community.

Jesper Hjortkjaer , the owner of Mil-tek Waste Solutions in New South Wales and Victoria, isn’t a

stranger to upcycling/recycling DIY projects. The idea behind the new showroom , and the reason for going above and beyond, is to lead by example, and at the same time open Mil-tek’s doors to the Central Coast business community.

A new life was given to old furniture that was destined for landfill , this included some from curb side collection and the transformation of old pallets into desks. However, the statement pieces, like the 4-meter recycled hardwood table in the meeting room, and the barn-style doors, were provided by Bib’n Brace, also a fellow founding member of CCSA.

Local cafes and Early Learning Centres are having their food waste collected and fed to chickens. People are increasingly keen to know where food comes from and where it goes. Kids on the Central Coast are no exception.

There are many opportunities for food waste. If no longer fit for human consumption, straight to animals is the next best option. This is more cost effective for the business, better for the community, and much better for the environment in all sorts of ways.

Farm visits by staff and children has resulted in high engagement and a lot of enthusiasm about the project. Children especially love following the journey of food. They are very excited to go and visit the chickens where they learn all about cycles and the value of looking after our land and resources wisely.

Families and staff also have the opportunity to 'adopt a chook' where the farm looks after the chook on their behalf, they receive eggs and are invited to open days.

Bib’n Brace, a manufacturer of doors and furniture from timber that would otherwise be going to waste from demolition sites has closed the loop. Now recycling its waste by sending its timber waste to DR Henderson who manufacture particle board from that waste which Bib’n Brace then use to make more recycled timber products at a reduced cost and with greater dimensional stability than they were able to achieve with solid timber.

“We save local timber that's now used and used again, expanding the trees life to create solid and beautiful doors & furniture. Our aim is to capture as much of this valuable resource as possible in order to prevent needless waste "

Timber is a renewable resource with an inherent value. Most tree’s ready for harvest are worth a little over $100 each to the forest owner, but when logged, dried and processed into timber or fibre are worth from $230/Tonne as wood chip to $1000/Tonne as sawn timber or raw chipboard.

Somewhere in that range is a sweet spot where waste timber recovery cost is lower than new timber processing. DR Henderson, an Australian manufacturer of timber board products have been working for 30 years to develop that sweet spot and are recovering as much “waste” timber as they can process to include in their particleboard products.

WildBlueGlobal are approved waste assessors to deliver the Bin Trim program. This provides businesses with free waste assessments and direction and support to help them recycle better. An assessment also opens the opportunity to apply for a rebate (up to $50,000) for equipment to help facilitate this process.
